Many times, as believers, we get caught up in the motions of faith.
We want to feel God.
We chase after experiences.
We long for goosebumps in worship, a sudden surge of peace in prayer, or a physical sign that confirms His presence.
But what happens on the days when we don’t feel Him?
What about the moments when our hearts feel dry, our prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling, and the spiritual high fades into the ordinary rhythm of life?
Does that mean He has left?
Does that mean His presence is any less real?
Not at all.
God Is Not a Feeling—He Is a Person
I often ask the Holy Spirit to help me overcome the need to feel Him because, trust me, He is not just a feeling.
He is a Person.
His presence is not dependent on our emotions.
His nearness is not dictated by our ability to sense Him.
Think about it this way:
When I’m at home with my husband, if I’m not cuddled up next to him, I don’t necessarily feel him in the house. But does that mean he isn’t there? No.
All I have to do is call his name—Babe! —and we converse.
That’s exactly how the Holy Spirit is.
He is there.
Whether you feel Him or not.
Whether you sense Him or not.
Whether you are in a worship concert, surrounded by a powerful move of God, or sitting in silence, struggling to pray.
He is not waiting for you to feel Him before He acts.
He is simply waiting for you to acknowledge Him.
Take God’s Word Seriously
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
How often do we read these words but fail to live as if they are true?
If God says He will never leave, why do we act as if His presence comes and goes?
If the Holy Spirit has made our hearts His dwelling place, why do we act like He only visits on Sundays?
God’s word is not based on our emotions—it is based on His character.
If He says He is with us, then He is.
If He says He will never forsake us, then He won’t.
Our responsibility is not to feel Him but to believe Him.
Stop Searching for What’s Already Inside
The Pharisees once asked Jesus when the Kingdom of God would come.
They were looking for something visible, something external.
But Jesus’ response was unexpected:
“The kingdom of God does not come with observation; nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”
(Luke 17:20-21)
They wanted an outward sign.
Jesus pointed them inward.
How often do we do the same?
How often do we look for external proof of God’s presence—waiting for an experience, a miracle, a supernatural sign—while ignoring the reality that He already dwells within us?
The Holy Spirit is not out there somewhere.
He is within you.
You don’t need to chase Him down.
You just need to acknowledge Him.
Maturity Has Damaged Us
Think about a toddler.
They follow you into every room.
They want to eat what you eat, drink what you drink.
They prefer your big crisps to their baby food.
They hit their foot on the door and immediately look at you for comfort.
They come home from school, eager to give you a breakdown of their day.
They obediently take off their clothes and ask for lunch without a second thought.
Why?
Because in their world, mommy or daddy is here, and that’s all that matters.
That’s what God wants from us.
No wonder Jesus said:
“Let the children come to me.”
“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word.”
God wants His babies.
All this “daddy of Christ” distance we put between ourselves and Him? It’s not working.
Look at Jacob—he held onto God and said:
“I will not let You go unless You bless me!”
That’s the kind of childlike dependence God desires from us.
So What Now?
Talk to Him, even when you don’t feel like it.
Just as I call out to my husband, call out to the Holy Spirit. Speak to Him in the ordinary moments of life.
Trust His Word more than your emotions.
Feelings change. God’s promises don’t. Live by what He said, not by what you feel.
Recognize that His presence is constant.
Whether in the high of worship or the quiet of your daily routine, He is always there.
So the next time you wonder, Where is God?
The answer is simple.
He’s right there.
Even if you don’t feel Him.
Even if you don’t hear Him.
Even if your heart feels numb.
The Kingdom of God is not something you need to find.
It’s already within you. Acknowledge Him—and live accordingly.
